It's going to be a dramatist's toolkit: a highly practical nuts-and-bolts to get the playwrights' group going. It'll be very useful for fiction and poetry

writers too, as we'll look at the main dramatic concepts that help writing connect with an audience. Basically Jules is going to compress what she teaches

the Traverse Young Writers into 90 minutes!

Jules is a playwright for stage and radio. Gorgeous Avatar was produced by the Traverse, toured Scotland and has also been performed in Japan and Germany.

Radio plays include Life: An Audio Tour (Radio 4), Overdue South (BBC Scotland) and Inner Critic (BBC7).She teaches Advanced Creative Writing for the Open

WRITING FROM HISTORY

A Talk By Gwen Chessell

at 7.30pm

St Cuthberts RC Church Hall, High Cross Ave, Melrose

Gwen intends to speak generally about writing to history - not just about why she likes writing history and what it entails but also about how other writers (fiction and non-fiction) tackle the 'history business'.  She intend to bring along examples of some other writers' work eg. Bernard Cornwell, Robert Harris, Alison Weir, Georgette Heyer, etc.  She will also talk about some of the rules and 'necessities' which must govern writing about the past. She’s glad to know that BWF is relaxed and informal  and hopes her talk will be also.

Gwen Chessell:

She is a former medical educationist and her first books and articles were in that field.  She went to Australia on a Churchill Fellowship to look at innovation in Australian Medical Education and got really interested in colonial history and the links between British and Australian colonial personalities, particularly those who have been forgotten and don't deserve to be forgotten.  This has given her something to do in retirement!
